What do you need to consider prior to treatment?

It is important that we have knowledge of any prescribed medications that you are taking. It is essential that you tell us if you have a pacemaker.

As conductive keratoplasty is carried out using just drops to numb the eye - “topical anaesthesia” there are no restrictions on what you may eat and drink prior to treatment.

Once a decision has been made to proceed with treatment, our secretarial team will liaise with you to arrange a convenient date on one of our treatment lists.

What to expect prior to treatment

A full out-patient assessment is required before proceeding to CK and this involves both a formal eye test (refraction) with our specialist optometrist and a full medical eye examination.

The optometrist will ensure that presbyopia is the only optical problem with the eye and then carry out a simulation of the effect of near vision. It is important that the non-dominant eye is treated, the brain always preferring the better distance vision to come from the dominant eye. Once your non-dominant eye has been determined, lenses can be placed over that eye to mimic the effect of CK, giving improved near vision at the expense of some distance clarity.

You will be asked to sign a consent form to state that you have been provided with, and understand all the information given relating to the treatment (including the risks and benefits) and that you agree to the proposed treatment.
